1950’s Cold War Propaganda – Fallout shelter
By
A short infommercial about nuclear war paranoia and fallout shelters. A fallout shelter is an enclosed space specially designed to protect occupants from radioactive debris or fallout resulting from a nuclear explosion. Many such shelters were constructed as civil defense measures during the Cold War. After a nuclear explosion, matter vaporized in the resulting fireball is exposed to neutrons from the explosion, absorbs them, and becomes radioactive. When this material condenses in the cloud, it forms dust and light sandy material that resembles ground pumice. The fallout emits both beta particles and gamma rays. Much of this highly radioactive material then falls to earth, subjecting anything within the line of sight to radiation, a significant hazard. A fallout shelter is designed to allow its occupants to avoid exposure to harmful fallout until radioactivity has decayed to a safer level.

It would kinda suck living in a dead nuclear wasteland after surviving in the fallout shelter. And don’t forget about the cannibalistic mutants that would be definitely OUT TO GET YOU.

And remember. If it isn’t Vault-Tec, it’s crap.

I read some of these comments and see, 50’s propaganda still works today.
The facts are usually true, its the way they are used, and what for which is the problem:
First get you thinking of a threat, (create a problem) then pose “their” solution, and apply it to you. Its not so much to sell you a bomb shelter, but to f* up your mind, and make you live in fear. fear of the unknown…
Same techniques are used today, e.g. Zeitgeist – 2 part movie, cause problem / create solution.

actually, the amount of science and research that went into survival during a nuclear attack is amazing. Civil defense participated in many atmospheric atomic tests out at NTS and gathered countless amounts of data regarding nuclear blasts. Survival during an attack was very possible, and fallout shelters did work. The destructive power of the blasts were hyped later

@psychosocialmuppet I’m sorry to tell you that the Pulowski Preservation shelter was designed to withstand a direct hit from a 25mt nuclear warhead. Your kind of leftist propaganda is harmful to society if and when a real international crisis arises. We can and will survive full scale atomic attack. Personally, i will be in a place called Vault 101 built by Vault Tech. We can live in a Vault Tech vault for years while radioactivity decreases to safe levels again.

I think this is more of a public service announcement (psa) than a piece of governemt propaganda, but still, cool video.
